Is this Kidderminster’s most active care home?

Home news

A Kidderminster care home is hoping to be recognised as the most active in the region after completing a special exercise challenge.

Residents and team members at Care UK's Brook Court, on Oldnall Road, exercised for more than 6200 minutes - or 100 hours - over the course of five weeks, as part of a nationwide initiative launched by Age UK, ‘Minute Your Moves’.

Is this Kidderminster’s most active care home?To reach the impressive milestone, residents and team members took part in a number of different activities to get moving, including balloon volleyball, dancing and regular walks. Overall, the home contributed to more than a third of the total Wyre Forest District minutes, while every participant received a certificate to celebrate the achievement.

Scot Young, a resident at Brook Court, said: “Nine times out of ten, you feel like you want to give up exercising when you get older, but this campaign made us realise we can still move and be active. I am very proud of myself.”

Gill Pratt, Home Manager at Brook Court, added: “We’re over the moon with how many minutes we’ve totalled over the course of just five weeks– I think it’s fair to say we’re one of the fittest care homes in the area!

“Staying active is so important, even more so for older people. Regular, light exercise can reduce the risk of falls and slow down the decline of some mental functions, making it a great way to remain as independent as possible while enjoying a number of activities, from walks in the fresh air to team sports.

“I’d like to say a big congratulations to the residents and team members who helped us reach this incredible milestone, and to our wonderful lifestyle team for organising a variety of activities to keep us moving.”

Brook Court is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home, which features 67 en-suite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
