Local students put pen to paper for Stansted care home

Home news

Residents at a Stansted care home have not let the pandemic stop them from making new friends.

An intergenerational pen pal initiative began when Care UK’s Mountfitchet House, on Coltsfield, received letters from Key Stage 2 pupils at Birchanger Church of England VC Primary School.

Local students put pen to paper for Stansted care homeThe first letters were sent at the beginning of the year, and residents were delighted to hear from their friends down the road. The pupils’ words gave residents the opportunity to reminisce about their own school years, families and childhoods as they wrote back.

With pupils now back at school, residents and pupils are planning to continue their pen pal scheme, and are looking forward to eventually meeting in person as soon as they are able.

Resident at Mountfitchet House, Sian, said: “I was so happy to receive letters from the pupils at the school, and wrote two letters back. It really brightened my day and I’m excited to hear from them again!”

Jane Maxwell, Home Manager at Mountfitchet House, said: “We were delighted to receive some very special letters from our friends at Birchanger Church of England VC Primary School.

“Intergenerational relationships have proven to be enriching for both sides, as they provide an opportunity for children and residents to learn from each other. The letters have been a real conversation starter too; we loved hearing about residents’ school years, childhood homes and families growing up. There is no doubt that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between our home and pupils at the school, so we look forward to receiving more letters soon!”

Mountfitchet House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
