A taste of America at a Sutton Coldfield care home

Home news

A local care home flew the American flag for a special event.

‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ rang out at Care UKs Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, when the team organised their very own Fourth of July celebrations.A taste of America at a Sutton Coldfield care home

To stay true to the American tradition, the home’s chef prepared a special United States-themed feast, complete with fried chicken and corn, key lime pies, apple crumble, pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, as well as American whisky to raise a toast for the special day. Residents also tapped their feet to classic American songs and played a fun game of volleyball with team members.

The event also gave many residents an opportunity to reminisce, including Helen Robinson, who previously visited her daughter in Michigan. Talking about the event, she said: ‘”It’s lovely to taste a bit of America in Birmingham.”

Dawn Covill, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We may not be able to go abroad just yet, but it didn’t stop us from having a fantastic time celebrating the Fourth of July at Mercia Grange.

“Our chef worked incredibly hard to create a true US-style menu for the day, and it’s fair to say it was a hit among residents. Coupled with the old American songs we listened to, it truly felt like we’d travelled all the way to the United States for an afternoon!

“Events like these offer residents a fantastic opportunity to reminisce about holidays and family trips in their younger years. We loved hearing their stories, and we can’t wait to explore another country soon.”

Mercia Grange is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia, and short-term respite care. The three-storey care home, which features 67 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
