Local care home invites Basingstoke residents to understand dementia

Home news

A local care home is inviting the community to a free, virtual event for families caring for loved ones living with dementia.

On Wednesday 18th August, from 2pm-3.30pm, the Care UK team at Dashwood Manor, on Bradley Way, will be hosting a virtual Understanding Dementia event.

Dementia specialist, Dr Nori Graham, who is the Vice President of the Alzheimer’s Society and has extensive experience in healthcare for older people, will be covering a number of topics to help people understand what it is like to live with dementia. There will also be support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with the condition.

Dil Pereira, Home Manager at Dashwood Manor, said: “In the UK, there are 850,000 people living with dementia, with an additional 209,600 people expected to develop the disease this year*. We recognise that many families may be affected as a result, therefore our event will provide professional expertise and insight to those who require it, as well as a platform for sharing experiences.

“Looking after a friend or relative with dementia can be difficult, and we want them to know they're not alone, and we're here to help. As this is our first community event, we are excited to welcome local residents digitally for an inspirational afternoon of knowledge and guidance.”

For anyone unsure about how to take part in the virtual event, help is at hand. The team at Dashwood Manor will host the joint event using Microsoft Teams, which is very easy to use. Simply call or email Customer Relations Manager, Leahanne Wilkinson, and she will send a link to join the event and share her tips to make the most out of the session.

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, the new care home, which is set to open later this year, will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities. Luxury facilities will include a café, hair and beauty salon, cinema and bar, and stunning gardens.

To book your place at this free event, please call Dashwood Manor Customer Relations Manager, Leahanne Wilkinson, on 01256 805988, or email leahanne.wilkinson@careuk.com.
