All aboard! Stansted care home residents take a virtual trip on the Orient Express

Highlighted home news

Residents at a Stansted care home were delighted to take a virtual reminiscence train journey on the iconic Orient Express.

The team at Care UK’s Mountfitchet House, on Coltsfield, were keen to bring some holiday spirit to the home, after learning about resident’s fond memories of train journeys during their younger years.

Creating a six-meter-long steam locomotive out of cardboard boxes, complete with fairy lights, window views and even a driver, the team set up a very special virtual trip on the Orient Express for residents to enjoy. With champagne on arrival, residents were able to secure a ticket for the once in a lifetime journey, which took place in the home’s cinema room.

88-year-old resident, Ann, said: “I really enjoyed the champagne and canapes, and watching all the scenery go past. It reminded me of my holidays and travelling the country when I was younger.”

Jane Maxwell, Home Manager at Mountfitchet House, said: “We had a fantastic time on our virtual train journey on the Orient Express.

“Here at Mountfitchet House, we are always looking for new, innovative ways to engage with residents, and support them to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. After hearing residents chatting about their fond memories of train trips in years gone by, we were inspired to create a very special afternoon adventure for them to enjoy.

“Reminiscence activities can be incredibly beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it can help to evoke happy memories and the associated emotions. It was a wonderful afternoon, and we’re already planning our next virtual trip!”

Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema, bar and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
