‘Tis the season for giving – Cheltenham care home Christmas hampers are a hit

Highlighted home news

A Cheltenham care home has distributed nearly 50 festive hampers as part of a new initiative to tackle loneliness among older people in the community this Christmas.

Care UK’s Sandfields, on St George’s Road, filled 45 hampers with tasty treats and gifts for local people – with a little help from local businesses and schools.

The home was overwhelmed with donations from local organisations keen to contribute to the appeal, including Waitrose, John Lewis, Sainsburys, Argos and Webbs Garden Centre, and also Cheltenham Ladies College, who designed and wrote Christmas cards to be given alongside the hampers.

The finished hampers, containing chocolates, mince pies, biscuits, a bottle of prosecco, as well as a selection of gifts, including candles, toiletries, crossword books, notebooks, mugs and socks, were created at the home by residents and team members before being distributed to people who may be feeling lonely at this time of year.

Malaika Charles, Home Manager at Sandfields, said: “We know just how difficult the festive season can be for some people, especially those who face the daunting prospect of spending Christmas on their own, away from loved ones – which is why we decided to launch our Christmas hamper appeal.

“We were overwhelmed by donations from organisations and individuals keen to help us tackle loneliness, and it was truly heart warming to see the community rally around a common cause. Everyone at the home got involved too, from residents forming an assembly line to put together the hampers to team members and relatives sending various items to be included – it definitely was a team effort.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has sent us items to include in our hampers. We’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.”
