Shinfield care home gains top marks from care inspectors

Home news

A Shinfield care home has been praised by national inspectors for its individualised approach to care.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Parsons Grange, on Westall Street, an overall ‘Good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.

The team impressed CQC inspectors by empowering residents to be as independent as possible. Team members were seen asking residents for their opinions and communicating with residents in specific ways tailored to the individual including using hand gestures and pictures or symbols as well as verbally.

On the day of the inspection, the team were hosting a Namaste session, which included hand massage, sensory lighting, tranquil videos and sounds of nature. Namaste care is a way of communicating and providing positive, meaningful interactions with residents living with advanced dementia.

Residents are actively encouraged to try new hobbies and activities at Parsons Grange with the lifestyle team on hand to support residents to lead fulfilling lives. There was an activities programme to encourage stimulation and participation in social interaction. Recently the home organised a birds of prey visit. One relative commented: “He loved the birds of prey event and he looked forward to it.”

Additionally, inspectors noted the team were kind and friendly, and attentive to the resident’s needs. Relative comments included: "The staff are respectful, proactive and reactive, and totally professional. They offer full support not only to the resident but to the whole family…" and "The welcome from everyone was special and dad has been surrounded by love and affection ever since.”

The inspectors observed compassionate and caring interactions between the team and residents. The impact these kind interactions had on the residents could be seen on their faces as they responded to team with smiles.

Claire Usher, Customer Relations Manager, at Parsons Grange said: “We are thrilled to receive this Good CQC rating.

“It's wonderful to see the encouraging remarks from the CQC inspectors; it is a real tribute to the team's dedication and commitment to continuing to deliver individualised, high-quality care while adjusting to the changing restrictions of the pandemic.

“I want to offer my heartfelt appreciation to everyone at Parsons Grange for their dedication, especially over the last 24 months. They are the reason that our care home is such a wonderful environment for all of the residents to live, and I appreciate all they do on a daily basis.”

To assess service standards at Parsons Grange, the CQC inspectors spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Parsons Grange care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building has been configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help encourage the creation of close-knit communities.
