Best pal-pacas - Dorset care home visited by a herd of fluffy four-legged friends

Home news

A care home in Dorset was joined by some unusual friends for a special afternoon of animal fun.

Residents at Care UK’s Ferndown Manor, on Golf Links Road, gathered to welcome two friendly alpacas, Whiskey and Hickery in the home’s gardens where they received plenty of fuss and attention.

As part of the animal therapy session, residents learnt about the history and characteristics of alpacas, as well as other interesting facts about the calming animals.

June Brown, aged 85 said: “I loved meeting the alpacas and was so excited to look up and see them in my room. I can't believe how tame and well behaved they were. They were also so soft to touch. I can't decide which alpaca is my favourite as they were both lovely. I am looking forward to seeing them again when they next visit.”

Sara Muslin, Home Manager at Ferndown Manor, said: “We had a wonderful afternoon meeting Whiskey and Hickery.

“Here at Ferndown Manor, we are always looking for new and exciting activities for residents to enjoy. Animal therapy has proven to be incredibly beneficial for older people, as it can be calming, prompt conversations, and put a smile on everyone’s faces. Alpacas are known for being gentle animals, which makes them perfect for care home visits.

“It was so lovely to welcome the two alpacas into the home, and we look forward to seeing them again very soon!”

Ferndown Manor has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives in a luxury environment. The home provides full-time residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care.
