‘Put yourself first sometimes, you deserve it’ – older women in Southmead share wisdom for International Women’s Day

Home news

To celebrate International Women’s Day, a care home in Southmead is putting residents in the spotlight.

Seven women, all living at Care UK’s Trymview Hall, on Southmead Road, have offered inspirational pieces of advice for young women today.

The words of wisdom overwhelmingly focused on living life to the full – Violet, aged 94, recommended to ‘get up and make the most of life’, while 101-year-old Joyce, added: ‘Money isn’t everything – follow your dreams’. To ‘do a job you love’ is also important, according to Emma, aged 89.

Meanwhile, a few residents advised women today to take their time and not to rush anything – in love or in life. Their recommendations included ‘take romance slowly’, from Jean, 91, and ‘think at least twice before you commit to anything’, according to 86-year-old Maureen.

Finally, Liz, aged 75 reminded women today to ‘put themselves first sometimes’, adding: ‘You deserve it’.

Nicole Anderson, Home Manager at Trymview Hall, said: “We wanted to celebrate International Women’s Day, and what better way to mark this special occasion than by asking residents to share their words of wisdom and advise for young women today.

“It’s been fantastic to have the chance to share the residents’ stories, their positivity and confidence is a true inspiration, and we hope that their advice will motivate women across the country to share their own achievements and successes.

“We are very proud of the inspirational women at Trymview Hall, and I’m sure women today will benefit greatly from the life lessons they have shared.”

International Women’s Day is a global day which has been marked since 1911 and celebrates women’s achievements while calling for a more gender-balanced world. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias, promoting a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination where difference is celebrated.

Trymview Hall provides full-time residential and dementia care, with 66 ensuite bedrooms, and has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
