West Drayton care homes invite community to honour VE Day

Two West Drayton care homes are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, Care UK’s Franklin House, on The Green, and The Burroughs, on Mill Road, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their very own 1940s-themed events.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Franklin House, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event. Taking place from 2pm-4pm, the home is set to transport the community back to the 1940s, where guests will be able to enjoy live entertainment from Lily Wood who will be singing classics from the era. Before the event starts, residents will be taking part in a lamp lighting ceremony at the entrance of the home to commemorate those who lost their lives serving for their country.

Meanwhile, locals are invited to a special street party at The Burroughs, from 11.30am-3pm. Guests will have the opportunity to play a host of traditional street games and enjoy delicious food.

Mathew V Mathew, Home Manager at Franklin House, said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our doors to the community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“The event is a chance to re-awaken old memories and offers a meaningful way for older people, and those living with dementia, to connect with others and celebrate a momentous event in our history.”

Loreen McGeoghan, Home Manager at The Burroughs, added: “As we approach VE Day, residents have been sharing their cherished stories from wartime Britain – it’s been so inspiring to hear their experiences and learn from one another.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into the home for a nostalgic and heartwarming day to remember!”

Franklin House and The Burroughs have been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The homes have plenty of space for activities, as well as a, hair and beauty salon, and café.
