Knutsford care home races to raise over £2,000 for dementia

A Knutsford care home has raised more than £2,400 for dementia research by holding a car-themed event that put a spotlight on one resident’s passion for Formula 1 racing.

Care UK’s Cranford Grange, on Hall Lane, hosted the ‘Race for Dementia’ event, bringing together family, friends and car enthusiasts to collect funds for the initiative. The event was inspired by 80-year-old resident David McVitie, who has dementia and is a lifelong fan of classic cars and F1.

David’s family worked closely with charity Race Against Dementia to organise the event, which featured a range of classic and performance cars.

As part of the event, a raffle was held, with prizes donated by various supporters. Among the items were a Michael Kors gold necklace, a signed autobiography from F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart and limited-edition keyrings. Hornby Hobbies and HMG Paints Ltd. also donated a Scalextric set to keep the racing theme alive.

The event drew a strong turnout, with local residents, visitors and car enthusiasts with over 15 stunning vehicles on display, including a 1920 Rolls Royce, vintage 1950s Jaguar, 1972 Ferrari Dino and a powerful Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees and supporters, Cranford Grange raised £1,445, with Care UK adding an additional £1,000.

Lisa Burrows, General Manager at Cranford Grange, said: “It’s been wonderful to see such a strong community spirit at Cranford Grange, all driven by David’s love for cars and motorsport.

“We’re thrilled with how successful the event has been. It’s so important to support initiatives like Race Against Dementia, especially as the disease affects many of our residents.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the charity’s team for ensuring David could still participate. It was a fun and memorable day for everyone involved!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Cranford Grange provides residential, dementia, nursing and respite care, and incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The home has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage collective interaction among the residents.
