Birmingham care home to welcomes community for educational event

A care home in Birmingham is opening its doors to the local community for an educational culinary event.

On Tuesday 12th August from 11am-1pm, Care UK’s Edgbaston Manor, on Speedwell Road, is inviting members of the local community to a special event designed to raise awareness   of dysphagia, and show carers how tailored meals can support those living with it.

Dysphagia is the medical term given to difficulty swallowing, a common symptom for older people, especially those living with dementia, Parkinson’s and many other conditions. Those living with dysphagia are often required to adopt a modified diet incorporating thickened liquids, to lower the risk of aspirating when drinking fluids.

The event will be hosted by the home’s Head Chef, Carl Cooper, who will provide his top tips to support people living with swallowing difficulties, especially those living with dysphagia. Attendees will also have an opportunity to sample tasty dysphagia-friendly versions of classic dishes.

Zoe Steventon, General Manager at Edgbaston Manor, said: “We’re proud to be opening our doors to the local community to share how our kitchen team supports residents with dysphagia, ensuring every meal is safe, enjoyable and dignified.

“Carl has carefully curated meals suited to residents’ individual needs without compromising on taste or nutrition and we look forward to the community coming along to get a taste for themselves.”

Edgbaston Manor has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The home provides full time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care; and it has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents. There is also plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
