A Newmarket care home resident celebrating her 100th birthday has shared her refreshingly straightforward secret to living a long and happy life – “No smoking!”
Peggy Saunders, who lives at Care UK’s Kentford Manor on Jeddah Way in Kennett, marked her centenarian status with banners, balloons and a homemade cake baked by the home’s chef Tina Williams – alongside 100 cards gifted to her by local schoolchildren, family, friends and team members.

She had a wonderful time surrounded by her children, grandchildren and friends – and even shared some words of wisdom.
When asked for advice for leading a long and rewarding life, Peggy said: “No smoking! Stay around the younger generation, as they make you feel younger, and remember to eat good, healthy food.”
Born in the village of Belton in Lincolnshire. In September 1946, she married Tony and the pair enjoyed 66 years together.
The couple began married life in Lincolnshire, where they started their family of four children. Tony’s role with regional health authorities later brought them to Cambridge, where they settled into a new chapter living in several villages in the area. Peggy has a head for numbers and worked in several office roles. She also minded children – something which reflects the caring and generous nature she is still known for today.
Having always had an adventurous spirit, Peggy played cricket and football as a child and also enjoyed knitting. She passed her sailing test with the Royal Yachting Association and even performed a loop-the-loop in a glider. To celebrate her 90th birthday, she took to the skies once again in a glider, proving age is no barrier to adventure.
Peggy today enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle keeping her mind busy with crosswords and puzzles at the care home.
Reflecting on her special day, Peggy said: “I had an outstanding birthday and didn’t expect anything quite like it. I was overwhelmed by the amount of work and preparation which went into making it so memorable, especially the 100 birthday cards. I couldn’t believe that both the King and Queen also signed my birthday card! I am so grateful to the team at Kentford Manor for making the day so special.”
Hannah Nurse, Home Manager at Kentford Manor, said: “It has been such a privilege to celebrate Peggy’s 100th birthday. She is a truly remarkable lady and her warmth and positivity light up the home every single day.
“Her adventurous spirit, from gliding through the skies to sailing the seas, is something we all admire.
“We are so proud to be part of her milestone celebration and to share in such a special moment with her and her family.”
Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, Kentford Manor incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities. The home is thoughtfully arranged into smaller suites to create a close-knit community where residents can enjoy spending time together, with welcoming shared spaces including a cinema room, café and hair and beauty salon.
