Solihull centenarian reveals secret to long life

A resident at a care home in Solihull celebrating a special milestone has shared her unique advice for leading a long and happy life.

Audrey Owen, who lives at Care UK’s Blossomfield Grange on Worcester Way, marked her 101st birthday in style with a personalised cat-themed chocolate cake prepared by the home’s head chef, Adrien Henard.

Audrey, known as Bunty, had a wonderful time surrounded by her loved ones and team members – and even shared some words of wisdom.

When asked for her secret to a rewarding life, Bunty said: “Having a great family around me…along with a slice of cake and a glass of sherry!”

Bunty was born in Liverpool but spent most of her childhood in Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

She attended Beaumaris Grammar School and still vividly remembers the practice drills during the second world war and the time she spent sheltering in the castle tunnels with her classmates. It was during this time her family opened their home to evacuees from Liverpool.

After her schooling years, Bunty worked as a receptionist at the local Bulkeley Arms Hotel in Anglesey.

Bunty lived around the corner from Len, whom she took a shine to and went on to marry at St Nicholas Church. The couple relocated to Solihull in 1947, where they raised four children, Janet, Peter, Vernon and Juliet. She now has four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren who regularly visit her at the home.

After relocating to Solihull, she regularly visited Beaumaris, often for three months over the summer with her family. In her past time, she also enjoyed knitting and often stitched clothes for her family.

Jo Hopkins, Customer Relations Manager at Blossomfield Grange, said: “It was lovely celebrating this very special milestone. Bunty is a much-loved resident here and marking her birthday was a joy, especially surprising her with the bespoke cake!

“At Blossomfield Grange, we strive to provide fun opportunities and tailored experiences for the residents so they can lead active and fulfilling lives. This includes celebrating special accomplishments or major birthdays.

“Perhaps we should take her advice on board and indulge in a slice of cake and a glass of sherry from time to time – cheers to Bunty!”

Blossomfield Grange provides high-quality residential, dementia and short-term respite care, with the home incorporating plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
