A care home in Crowborough stepped back in time to mark the 81st anniversary of VE Day.
As part of the festivities, Heather View on Beacon Road, welcomed retired veterans from the Chelsea Pensioners, as well as residents and relatives from four neighbouring Care UK homes including Smyth Lodge, Weald Heights, Bowes House and Montfort Manor.

The home was transformed for the occasion, with the Chelsea Pensioners performing classic songs as residents sang along, enjoying an afternoon of reminiscence.
A special VE Day ploughman’s lunch was served, followed by Victoria sponge and scones with cream and jam, bringing everyone together and giving residents the chance to share memories of wartime Britain. Many also brought along personal memorabilia, sparking conversations about their experiences and the stories behind treasured items.
Smyth Lodge resident Peter Ribbons, 87, said: “I have had a wonderful day, and it has brought back many memories. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting other veterans and talking with the Chelsea Pensioners.”
Sadie Hudson, Home Manager at Heather View, said: “We had a wonderful time honouring VE Day with residents, their families and the Chelsea Pensioners.
“As a ‘Veteran Friendly Framework’-accredited care home, fostering meaningful connections and encouraging residents – especially veterans – to reminisce with the local community is an important part of life at Heather View. Our VE Day celebrations provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to share their memories and reflect on the sacrifices made during the war.
“I’d like to thank our neighbouring homes for joining us and our team, who worked so hard to make the day special.”
