Jan Gledhill

Home Manager

Jan Gledhill

I firmly believe that continuity of care and strong leadership are key to the stability we have created within the team at Mere Hall.

Leading by example is at the heart of my role, and I am committed to fostering a positive atmosphere where every colleague feels supported and differences are respected.

My favourite part of the day is always the personal interactions with everyone I work with. I love being face to face with residents, visitors and colleagues. These moments make a big difference, especially for those who are new to the home.

I achieved my MSc in Public Management, following on from my Registered Manager’s Award and NVQ Level 4 in Health and Social Care. Before joining Care UK, I worked as a Quality Assurance Manager for another care home provider, gaining valuable experience in maintaining and improving high standards of care.

My biggest career highlights include opening a new home during the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic - a huge challenge that I now see as a real achievement - and supporting colleagues to grow and progress their careers with confidence.

Outside of work, I enjoy family holidays in our touring caravan, keeping fit, and I’m looking forward to welcoming a new puppy soon.

Adele Harrison
Adele Harrison
Deputy Manager

I am proud to have joined Care UK following my previous role as a Senior Care Assistant, bringing with me a strong commitment to high standards and person-centred care. I currently hold my NVQ Level 3 and have completed leadership courses alongside this, with my NVQ Level 5 now underway. My previous experience as a Medication Coordinator supports me in confidently overseeing and managing medicines within the home.

I believe effective leadership is about leading by example, motivating others and showing resilience, particularly during challenging times. Strong communication, empathy and the ability to problem-solve are essential qualities in my role, as is looking ahead to ensure residents’ health, wellbeing and care needs are always met to the highest standard.

One of the aspects of my role that makes me most proud is supporting and developing colleagues. I enjoy training staff and helping them grow in confidence and competence, knowing that strong teams deliver the best care. I firmly believe that good leaders create opportunities for others to become even better.

Some of my biggest career highlights include being nominated for the National Care Awards, supporting a home to improve from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’.

Outside of work, I enjoy shopping and spending quality time with my family and my pet dog.

Diana Rotaru

Dementia Manager

I began my career in care as a Senior Care Assistant, where I developed a strong passion for supporting people living with dementia. I’m currently completing my NVQ Level 4, which is helping me to further build my knowledge and leadership skills so I can continue to provide the highest standard of care.

The most important part of my role is ensuring residents’ wellbeing and happiness, while also supporting and motivating the team to consistently deliver excellent, person-centred care.

My favourite part of the working day is spending time with the residents and seeing them smile. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I can make a positive difference, even in small ways, and help brighten someone’s day.

My biggest career highlight to date has been being promoted to Dementia Manager and being trusted to lead such a caring and dedicated team. I’m proud of the work we do together and of knowing that residents feel safe, cared for and valued because of the commitment my colleagues show every day.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and exploring new places whenever I get the chance.

Tina Smithson
Tina Smithson
Lifestyle Lead

I bring a wide range of experience to my role as Lifestyle Lead from across my career in care. I am a retired Psychiatric Nurse and previously led the Nurse Day Care Unit at Rampton High Secure Hospital. I have completed various courses in dementia care, and since joining Mere Hall, I’ve continued to develop my skills through hands-on, on-the-job training.

My role calls for creativity, compassion and a good sense of humour, alongside strong organisational and time-management skills. I work closely with colleagues across the home to plan, develop and deliver meaningful activities that meet the individual needs, interests and goals of each resident. Acting with honesty, professionalism and teamwork is central to how I support residents, families and colleagues every day.

My favourite moments at work are the small but powerful ones – when a resident truly shows enjoyment during an activity, or when a song, piece of music or experience sparks a special memory. Seeing those connections is incredibly rewarding.

I am most proud when I see residents living fulfilled, happy lives and engaging in activities that bring them joy and purpose. Enabling this is the most important part of my role.

Outside of work, I enjoy walking my dog, knitting, sewing, painting, yoga and camping.

Head Chef

My journey into catering began with my role as a Kitchen Team Leader at a restaurant chain, where I developed strong leadership skills and a real passion for working as part of a busy, supportive team. I am now proud to be Head Chef at Mere Hall Care Home, where I focus on delivering food that residents truly enjoy.

In my role, good time management, team leadership and an outgoing personality are essential. I enjoy working closely with the kitchen team to make sure every meal is prepared to a high standard, while also being flexible and responsive to residents’ preferences and dietary needs.

One of the best parts of my day is spending time speaking with residents and finding out what foods they enjoy most, then turning those conversations into meals that bring comfort and enjoyment. The most important part of my role is making sure food quality is always kept to a high standard, so residents can enjoy every meal they are served.

My biggest career highlight is receiving praise from residents and knowing that they are happy with the food I prepare. That feedback means a great deal to me and reassures me that I am doing a good job. I am also proud of the strong team we have in the kitchen and our shared commitment to delivering meals that residents look forward to.

I am proud to be part of the team at Mere Hall, bringing a wide range of administrative, secretarial and customer service experience to my role. Since leaving school, I have worked across several sectors including a ferry company, a GP surgery, an adoption and fostering agency, and as a medical secretary within Hull and East Yorkshire hospitals.

I am qualified to Level 3 in Business Administration and Business Skills, and I also hold RSA Level 3 qualifications in text, word and audio processing. Before joining Mere Hall, I worked as a Management Assistant, providing secretarial support to the Managing Director of a passenger and freight shipping company.

In my role, I am committed to excellent customer care and always uphold high standards of confidentiality and data protection. Being organised, trustworthy and approachable is essential, along with having an empathetic and caring nature. I enjoy creating a calm, welcoming first impression for everyone who comes into the home.

My favourite part of the working day is feeling valued and knowing I make a difference. I love building positive relationships with residents, their families and my colleagues, and being a reassuring presence for people when they need support.

One of my biggest career highlights was being a Panel Manager for an Adoption and Fostering team and playing a part in matching vulnerable children with loving, forever families.

I feel proud to be a vital part of the Mere Hall team, helping to provide warmth, security and professionalism every day.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, going for walks, taking holidays and going out for meals.

Senior Care Assistant and Dementia Lead

My journey in care has led me to a role I feel very passionate about as Senior Care Assistant and Dementia Lead at Mere Hall. I have completed Dementia Awareness e-learning and Informed in Dementia training, and next I will complete further Dementia Lead training. This ongoing development supports me to provide compassionate, informed care to residents living with dementia.

I believe that caring, compassion and patience are essential characteristics in my role, along with a deep respect for residents, their families and colleagues. Supporting others to understand dementia better and promoting a person-centred approach is at the heart of what I do every day.

My favourite part of the working day is usually mid-afternoon, when residents are enjoying activities together. Our residents love to sing and dance, and I really enjoy joining in with them, putting on my dancing shoes and sharing those joyful moments. Seeing residents engaged, smiling and connecting with one another is incredibly rewarding.

One of my biggest career highlights to date has been gaining the role of Dementia Lead. I am proud to support residents, families and staff to improve understanding and the quality of dementia care within the home. The most important part of my role is ensuring staff have up-to-date dementia training that they can reflect on and use in their day-to-day care.

Outside of work, I enjoy countryside walks with my best friend and her little pup Nelly, often visiting a beautiful local waterfall.

Being approachable is important to me, as I enjoy getting to know residents and colleagues and helping wherever I can. My favourite part of the working day is seeing the residents and knowing that my work helps support their comfort and wellbeing.

What makes me most proud in my role is going home at the end of the day knowing I’ve helped keep residents and colleagues safe. Health and safety is a key focus for me.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing pool, fixing cars and spending quality time with my family. Being in the role I am in now is very rewarding, and I’m proud to play my part in supporting life at Mere Hall every day.
