Rick Mayne

Home Manager and Infection Prevention and Control Champion

Rick Mayne

I've worked for Care UK since 2013 and joined because I wanted to work for a growing company that provided the highest level of care for residents.

In this role theres no standing still. As well as listening to residents and your team you need to inspire them to do their best and all while looking for ways to improve the way we work and deliver the best. However, there are always moments to enjoy seeing residents enjoying the lifestyle that living here gives them.

I'm also the Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Champion for Sherwood Grange. It's my job to establish and maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness so that residents, colleagues and visitors keep safe.

In my free time I love travelling and camping. Ive visted Europe, America and some of Asia. I like travelling around in my old VW campervan.

I became a registered general nurse in 1993, and I joined Care UK in September 2017 for a fresh challenge. I’ve worked in different areas of nursing, including caring for people with complex disabilities and brain injuries.

I believe it’s important to be open and honest, and to have empathy and compassion in this role. I work as part of the team to ensure residents are always receiving the best, personalised care. I love making individual residents smile – we can all make a difference to a person’s day.

Throughout 2018 and 2019 we’ve been implementing our own vision and values, which the team have fully embraced. Sherwood Grange has also been working with Care UK in a ‘Good to Great’ programme to focus on achieving an outstanding rating at our next CQC inspection. We’re determined to do it!

I come from a very different background to care – I used to work as a gemologist in a jewellers and I’ve managed a few jewellery stores. However, I wanted to make a difference and use my interpersonal skills to benefit older people and their families.

Empathy is absolutely vital in this role. You need to put yourself in the place of the resident and their family so you can relate to what they’re experiencing. I do everything I can to make the new resident’s transition into the home as easy and enjoyable as possible.

I love having the chance to sit with residents and have a cup of tea together and listen to their life stories. Half way through the afternoon we always stop for a cuppa and a chat. It’s the best time of the day.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing football, going to the gym and catching up with friends over a meal. I’m also a film nerd, so it’s great to settle down in front of the TV of an evening with a drink.

My background is in retail and fashion, and I’ve been able to bring my creative thinking and sense of fun directly into my role at Sherwood Grange.

My background is in retail and fashion, and I’ve been able to bring my creative thinking and sense of fun directly into my role at Sherwood Grange. Every day is so varied, which is fantastic, and I enjoy working on group activities with residents, as well as with them on a one-to-one basis, when I can get to learn more about them.

Rick, the manager here, ensures that every day here is full of fun for everyone. He also has the foresight to recognise your skills and strengths, even if you haven’t worked in care before. He gives you the freedom to take a role in different directions and explore different approaches.
