Salima Baidoo

Home Manager

Salima Baidoo

I’ve worked for Care UK for over a decade now.

I started as a carer, so I’m really proud to have got to where I have. You still get challenges – every family and new resident is different, every person is an individual, and, initially, families can be worried about putting the care of their loved one into the hands of people they don’t know. Gaining people’s trust takes time, but is one of the most important things we do.

Aside from supporting new families and residents into the home, day-to-day I relish seeing residents happy, comfortable and looking smart. I think if they’re happy and comfortable they must feel at home. In which case, we’re doing things right!

Deputy Manager

I have a BSc in health and social care and am enrolled in Care UK’s home manager training scheme. I am passionate about what I do and really proud of my role here. I started my career as a carer and have progressed to my current role as deputy manager.

Working in care, it is important to love what you do, I know it’s not a job that appeals to everyone, but I feel rewarded knowing we make a positive difference to people’s lives. You also need to be firm but fair in your decision making, as well as be organised. The most important aspect of my role is making sure every resident is well cared for safely and with dignity.

My favourite part of the day is the morning when I do my walkarounds. I try and see every resident, asking if they’ve slept well and giving them a copy of the newspaper. It’s a small part of what I do, but it’s important to residents too because they always ask me where I’ve been, if I haven’t managed to catch them.

Outside of work, I like to cook as well as read action novels and watch adrenalin-filled action movies.

Lifestyle Lead

Joining Care UK in 2006 allowed me to work in a place where I can help to make a difference and build on my career. I have been in the care industry since my first work experience and since then have earned my N.V.Q. 2 Health and Social Care and NAPA qualifications.

This role has taught me the value of patience, care and really understanding an individual and their needs. As a team we learn to listen carefully and to provide any suggestions for the best outcomes. It is so rewarding to see the residents smiling and enjoying their time with us. If I’m not cracking jokes I’m either helping with organised activities or just having a catch up.

The biggest highlight for me at the home is to see someone’s wish come true like having their first driving lesson, flying in a plane, or meeting the pope!

Business Administrator

I hold a master’s degree in management and was previously an accountant. Both have equipped me with the strategic planning and organisational skills that are essential in my role as business administrator.

I chose to join Care UK for its reputation as a leading care provider with clear values and a genuine commitment to high-quality care. It is also an incredibly supportive organisation making it a great place to grow and learn.

In my day-to-day work, I take real pride in creating systems that bring clarity. For example, managing complicated rotas for colleagues, handling confidential records and supporting compliance. Effective administration means that Whitby Dene functions efficiently and my colleagues can focus on the important task of caring for others.

I take immense pleasure from finishing tasks well, and knowing that I’ve successfully completed a challenge. It’s fulfilling knowing that I’ve been able to make someone’s day a little easier or run more smoothly.

I enjoy all my work but a career highlight for me was streamlining admin systems at a large religious organisation. I helped reduce delays and improve communication across all departments. My experience there taught me that compassion and efficiency can work hand in hand, which is an insight I’ve brought with me into my current position here.

Outside of work, I love reading, cooking and spending time with my family. I also value exploring faith-based reflections which help keep me grounded and compassionate.

Chef

Before joining Care UK, I was a chef in an Italian restaurant. I came to Whitby Dene because I wanted to be part of a team that really cares about people.

While good cooking skills are important, so too is making food that meets residents’ needs. Food should be both nutritious and bring comfort.

I feel lucky to be a chef here where I can use my skills to make a real difference to people’s everyday lives and help residents stay happy and healthy.

When I am not working, I still love to cook at home, as well as spend time with my family.

Receptionist

I have two level two NVQs, one in business and administration and another in customer services. I feel really proud to work for Care UK, supporting colleagues, residents and visitors to the home.

Being on reception means it is important to look smart, be friendly and polite and be willing to help others. It helps to be calm and be able to take everything in your stride. You also need to be organised and be able to carry out tasks effectively and as efficiently as possible. It’s always rewarding knowing when I know I have completed a task well.

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, shopping and watching movies.

Maintenance

I hold a level two City and Guilds maintenance operative qualification. I previously worked in maintenance but chose to join Care UK because it’s an organisation that values the welfare of both residents and colleagues.

Working in maintenance means that tasks are usually about making someone’s life and living conditions more comfortable. Being able to do that well is really important to me. I always feel proud knowing that I’m able to make residents happy and comfortable in their surroundings – I always try to go the extra mile for them.

In my role, you need to be patient and understanding. You also need to be tolerant and genuinely care for the people around you.

When I’m not working, I spend my time with family and friends.
