Ernie’s marathon story wins a prize

Home news

A story about Whitebourne resident Ernie Lowden carrying the Olympic flame when he was a young man back in 1948 has won a £125 runners up prize in the Care UK short story competition held to mark World Book Day.

His entry told of how he ran in the Olympic Torch relay between Wembley and Torquay and it was accompanied by pictures and documents to illustrate his story.

He was helped by our activities organiser Sarah Tharp who helped Ernie, now 88,  to research the story and put the entry together.

Home manager Ros Stevenson said:” We are delighted Ernie won. The money will be used to put towards a flat screen TV for our home."
