Writing residents take top prize

Home news

More than a third of Laurel Dene’s residents had a hand in creating a book of collages, pictures and stories which won the £250 first prize in a national story competition to mark World Book Day

More than 30 residents contributed to the entry in the Care UK short story competition which took the form of a scrap book.

Home manager Kathy Harman said: “We are delighted to have won and we will be putting the prize money towards a computer for residents’ activities. The book will be going on display for everyone to look at.

“We had great fun putting the book together. It is very colourful and there are more than 30 paintings, collages and stories in the book. When the residents were telling us stories about their lives we had to guess whether they were fiction or non-fiction. Some were very emotional, some were funny and some were surprising!”

“This is the second book we have produced. We also did one at Christmas and the aim is now to produce one for each of our six units.

“This project was led by residents and was supported by our activities co-ordinators Sue Birks, Ivana Kanclerz and Katarzna Wisniewska. I am very proud of the team who did a great job.”
