Call me “Maam” Your Majesty

Home news

It’s not every day you meet a woman the Queen called “Maam” but as we were preparing to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee we were intrigued to hear that one of The Terrace’s residents Eileen Mackenzie Smith, knew the queen personally when they worked together in the ATS.

Eileen was a driver in the army days, and army captain which was a rank higher than the queen making her the queen’s boss.

She remembers those days fondly smiling, saying they were hard days, everyone worked hard men and women alike, the Queen had to call Eileen “maam” as she was her boss. Eileen still has a photo of her and the Queen from those days.
