Free dementia seminar for people caring for loved ones

Carers in Islington are being invited to a free seminar at Care UK’s Lennox House care home to learn more about dementia and how to help friends and relatives with the condition.

The seminar will take place at the home in Durham Road on Saturday 9th November and will be led by dementia expert James Wilson, who lectures in Mental Health at Southampton University.

‘The Foundations of Dementia’ will provide an understanding of what dementia is, as well as giving useful information on how to help people with dementia live a calm and fulfilled life.

Mr Wilson said: “ ‘If only I had known that at the start of my journey’ is the most common statement I hear from carers, who have described their journey of care as ‘slowly fumbling your way along an obstacle-filled path while blindfolded, frustrated and alone.’

“It can be difficult to navigate your way through the unusual and new complexities that are thrown up when dementia enters your life uninvited. I hope the seminar gives people some practical information and allows carers to meet others in the same position.”

Home manager Florence Clarke said: “We have held other events to support people caring for loved ones and we know that they have proved helpful. James is a wonderful speaker who manages to inject humour into his very knowledgeable and helpful talk.

“We hope that, by better understanding the changes in their loved one’s personality and behaviour, carers will be better placed to find help and support and to realise they are not alone.”

In the afternoon there will be a chance to meet some of Care UK’s expert carers to ask questions about dementia and there will be an opportunity to see around the home and meet some of the award-winning team.

Places for the free seminar, which begins at 11am, are limited. Anyone wishing to take part should email Florence at  florence.clarke@careuk.com  or call on 0333 434 3050.
