Free seminar to help Paddington residents caring for people with dementia

Home news

People caring for loved ones with dementia are being invited to a free seminar at Forrester Court, where dementia experts will give advice on the condition which affects one in six people over the age of 80 nationwide.

On Tuesday 8th October dementia experts from Care UK will offer information about dementia as well as practical advice on improving a loved one’s wellbeing.

Among the speakers will be Rose Elliot, Care UK’s dementia specialist nurse. Rose has more than 20 years’ experience of working with older people with mental health issues. She will be available to talk to visitors in one-to-one sessions about how they can find support and create strategies in their own home to help their loved one.

Home manager Beata Brzozowska said: “Caring for someone with dementia can be particularly difficult for a friend or relative as they have no training and do not know what to expect. They also have emotional ties to the person and this can make things more troubling for them.

“We hope the seminar will not only provide people with practical ideas and information but will enable them to meet other people who are in similar positions, so they realise that they are not alone.”

Beata said: “We find that many people caring for loved ones with dementia go out to work. They have told us that many support groups meet during the day and so they do not have the access to the information and advice they would like.”

As well as advice on dementia, there will also be the opportunity to talk to an independent financial adviser from Ashcourt Rowan, with experience of helping families and individuals plan for long-term care.

Visitors will also have a chance to pick up a free copy of the Care UK book ‘As Easy As ABC’ – a guide to fun activities which increase the wellbeing of people with dementia. For those who cannot attend the seminar, the book can be downloaded at www.careuk.com.

The event will take place from 4pm to 7pm. It is free and visitors are welcome to drop in at any time during the session. For further enquiries, please call 0333 4343029.
