Kings Court Sheep in the Running

Home news

For the second year running, Cotherstone pre-school organised a family fun day combined with the Teesdale Sheep Grand National at Moorcock Inn, Eggleston.

Taking place on Sunday 17th August – a bright but blustery day, this major event for the local farming community was proudly sponsored by Kings Court care home.

As a thank you for all the assistance received from Kings Court care home, one of the races was named after the home, ‘The Kings Court Care UK Lamb National’.

The runners in our race were:-

  • Larry the Lamb - Larry’s a bit of a lad, and a bit of a goer……….. at least we hope he is
  • Bo Peep - She’s a bit lonely, because she lost all her friends, and doesn’t know where to find them.
  • The Wild Wooley - The question is whether he will calm down for the race.
  • Little Bo Peep - The Shepherdess of the family but can she hold it together today
  • Timmy - Not to be underestimated….. he might seem all soft and fluffy on the top, but underneath he’s dead hard.  Proving himself last year to be just that, coming first in the 4th race last year

Timmy won this race, however he did not win the final race, The McFarlane Butchers Sheep Steak Grand National.

The event was well attended and supported by all the Dales folk and the staff and families of Kings Court.  Deputy Manager of Kings Court (and part-time sheep farmer), Jules Coulthard along with her friend Jo, brought two of their sheep – Sonny and Jeffrey, along to the home to meets some of the residents.

Residents pictured are Tommy, a retired shepherd, Nancy, a retired sheep farmer and Edith, who previously had a small holding where she raised sheep.  Also pictured are staff Hayley Coatsworth, John Parkin, Judith Parkin and Jules Coulthard and friend Jo.

The initial estimate was that £2,200 was raised on this eventful and fun day – all proceeds going to Cotherstone Pre-school – a village school in the Durham Dales.
