Barnard Castle care home is shortlisted for national award

Highlighted home news

A Barnard Castle care home is celebrating after a team member has been shortlisted for a national award.

Jules Coulthard, Deputy Home Manager at Care UK’s Kings Court, on Market Place, has been named a finalist for the Sara Berrio Care Champion category in the National Care Awards, which recognises individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of residents and their relatives.

The awards are held annually to celebrate the very best people in the long-term care sector, culminating in an awards ceremony on Saturday 26th November. The 20 categories highlight excellence within the sector, and reward those who work tirelessly to provide consistently outstanding care.

Jules, who has worked at Kings Court for an impressive 31 years, takes great pride in ensuring a strong connection between the care home and the local community, maintaining the tight-knit relationships many residents who have grown up in Barnard Castle are familiar with.

Keen to preserve the passions and interests of residents, many of whom come from farming backgrounds, Jules works hard to maintain their love of the countryside. Thanks to Jules forging strong connections with local country show, Eggleston Show, residents are highly involved with the annual event – often bringing home first place prizes and certificates.

Further proving her dedication, Jules’s leadership has seen the home’s fundraising efforts soar, with the home’s last annual Christmas fair raising an astonishing £1,300 for Making Memories, a local dementia support group.

Commenting on her nomination, Jules said: “I was thrilled to be nominated for the award and was incredibly excited to hear that I’ve been listed as a finalist. Many of the residents I now care for I knew when I was a child, so it’s important to me that I show them the same care and encouragement they gave to me.”

A resident at Kings Court, added: “Jules is incredibly friendly, helpful and has a great sense of humour – she went out of her way to help me settle in and form friendships within Kings Court.

“During my time here, Jules has helped me improve my confidence massively and for that I’m really grateful.”

Mitch Lloyd, Home Manager at Kings Court, said: “Jules’s community efforts – both here in the home and in the wider area – have changed this home into something which really engages our residents. We are proud of our home and its standing in the local community. Jules and I often comment that we will move in eventually – we have our rooms picked out and Jules says that as long as she can keep wearing her wellies, she will be a happy resident!”

Kings Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides residential care as well as short term respite and end of life care.
