Scarlet House and Stroud DC launch campaign to make a Dementia Friendly District

Home news

Scarlet House care home in Stroud has partnered with Stroud District Council to launch Stroud’s Dementia Friendly District campaign.

To commemorate the launch of the campaign, which coincided with Dementia Awareness Week, the team at Scarlet House and Stroud District Council joined forces to invite local people to learn more about what it is like to live with dementia by hosting a series of events.

The local council teamed up with representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK and Gloucester Older People’s Alliance to host an information session designed to provide advice and support for family carers of those living with dementia.

There were also two Dementia Friends sessions hosted at Ebley Mill – an initiative from the Alzheimer’s Society, these information sessions help increase understanding of dementia and encourage people to think about the small things they can do which can make a big difference to people living with dementia and their carers in the local community.

Jim MacLeod, customer relations manager at Scarlet House and Dementia Friends champion, said: “We are thrilled to be working so closely with Stroud District Council and would like to thank them for their support. All three events were a great success, with over 50 people attending throughout the day.

“I hope the insights and experience of the experts we had on hand will have broadened local people’s understanding of dementia and help Stroud take a step closer to becoming a dementia-friendly community.”

Emma Keating Clark, Health and Wellbeing Coordinator at Stroud District Council said: “The Dementia Friends initiative sessions were brilliant with some really inspiring stories. People were encouraged to go and talk to family and friends about ways they can support people they know living with dementia. We hope this campaign helps people discover the small acts they can do to make a difference.”

Midcounties Co-operative, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose Stroud have all signed up for Dementia Friends sessions for their staff.
