Thorrington care home teams up with local Stroke Services

Silversprings care home in Thorrington is teaming up with Tendring Specialist Stroke Services (TSSS) on Thursday 30th June for a free event designed to help local people recognise the signs of a stroke and to provide support for those caring for loved ones recovering from a stroke. 

From 2pm to 3.30pm, Moira Prentice, a registered nurse and volunteer at the TSSS charity, will provide access to expert advice and a range of resources available for those in the different stages of recovery. Moira will also cover how to recognise the signs of a stroke and a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) – commonly known as a mini stroke.

After the stroke awareness event there will also be a chance for attendees to ask questions and share their own experiences. Visitors will also have the opportunity to talk to the team at Silversprings and take a closer look at the care home, including the new Bluebell Suite. This latest addition to the care home means that Silversprings can now welcome residents who require round-the-clock nursing care.

Home manager, Maggie Ziemianska, explained why she believed the stroke awareness event was vitally important: “Statistics from the Stroke Association show a stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK, which means around every three and a half minutes someone in the UK is suffering from a stroke. It is also estimated there are around 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK, and over a half of these people have a disability while a third of survivors are dependent on the care of others.

“With strokes being so prevalent, arming people with plenty of information can literally save lives and it is proven that responding quickly on recognising the signs of a stroke can help reduce damage to a person’s brain and improve their chances of a full recovery.  As so many people are caring for loved ones recovering from a stroke, access to expert advice and signposting to further ongoing support can make all the difference to quality of life and future wellbeing.
