Cedrus House hits the books for World Read Aloud Day

Cedrus House hit the books recently when it took part in this year’s World Read Aloud Day.

Residents from Cedrus House enjoyed a day of interactive reading and literature-based activities to mark the annual event.

The team invited the local community to join residents for the day, and enjoyed a free screening of a short film created by Care UK featuring international Storyteller Laureate, Taffy Thomas MBE.

In the film, Taffy, the patron of The Society for Storytelling, provided his top tips and advice for reading and explained the therapeutic benefits of reading aloud to older people.

Guests at Cedrus House also enjoyed sharing stories and reading with local story teller, Alan Jones who visited the care home to mark the celebrations.

Home manager, Michelle Webster, explained why Cedrus House was one of several Care UK care homes that took part in World Read Aloud Day: “It may come as a surprise to many just how beneficial reading aloud can be for older people; particularly those living with dementia.

“Here at Cedrus House, interactive reading sessions are very important to us as they help us to engage residents and encourage communication.

“We are delighted that Alan could join us for the day, it was a lovely opportunity for the residents and local community to come together to discuss their favourite books and share stories with one another.”
