Whitebourne wins approval of national care inspectors

Home news

A national care watchdog has given Whitebourne the seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising its caring and attentive team members.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Whitebourne an overall ‘good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.

The home was rated ‘good’ in five out of five categories for safety, effectiveness, caring, being well-led, and responsiveness.

The report praised the home for providing residents with a multitude of activities to take part in day-to-day, and for their innovative ways of making residents’ wishes come true. Regular activities taking place at the home include listening to music, enjoying arts and crafts, watching films, and being pampered in the beauty salon.

Residents are also able to participate in themed events, which have most recently included visits from donkeys, rabbits and guinea pigs from a local farm, as well as staff dressing up as their favourite characters for World Book Day.

The team was praised for being kind, caring and supportive, with one resident stating, “I’m very happy, I love life here”.The report also noted that the home treated residents with dignity and respect by team members who were considerate of individual people’s needs.

It was also reported that residents are involved in the planning of their care, and are offered choices about their ongoing treatment at the home. Residents’ care plans are created based on their likes and dislikes, and residents themselves are encouraged to contribute towards the plan with the help of their family. The team members support residents to maintain choice and control of their care.

The report praised the variety of food on offer for residents to enjoy, which is freshly prepared by the home’s own chef depending on their preferences. Food was matched to people’s likes and dislikes, with one resident commenting, “I like the food, if it’s something you don’t like you can always get something different”.

The home received high praise from residents and their families during the inspection. A family member stated, “Despite her dementia, [my relative] has had a happy, fulfilled, content and extended life as a result of the outstanding care provided by Whitebourne”.

Derek Purchese, home manager at Whitebourne, said: “We strive to create a welcoming ‘home-from-home’ feel at Whitebourne, and I’m so pleased our efforts have been recognised by the CQC’s inspectors. Everyone here works incredibly hard to support residents with compassionate, person-centred care, and to receive a ‘good’ rating in all five categories shows just how dedicated the team is at looking after every individual’s needs.

“I’m extremely proud of our team, and I would like to say thank you for their hard work and dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families.”
