“Stay Single” – Halstead care home residents share relationship advice for Valentine’s Day

Home news

Residents at a Halstead care home have shared their heart-warming and hilarious relationship advice ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Love will always find a way — but sometimes it needs a nudge in the right direction, which is why residents at Care UK’s Colne View have shared their secrets to a happy marriage, with words of wisdom including ‘staying single’ and remembering that ‘men are immature’.

“Stay Single” – Halstead care home residents share relationship advice for Valentine’s Day88-year-old Ron, married for 50 years, revealed the key to love is patience, while 92-year-old Betty, married for 30 years, stressed the importance of resolving an argument before you go to bed.

96-year-old Cyril, a former veteran and carpenter, fell in love with his neighbour Vera, after she asked him to fit some shelves. Married for the rest of Vera’s’s life, Cyril says it was ‘the best day’s work he’s ever done’.

Meanwhile, 86-year-old resident Sheila, who married at 33, advised not to marry too young, as men are immature, and 103-year-old Margaret revealed the real secret to happy marriage is not to marry at all.

Razvan Stanbeca, Home Manager at Colne View, said: “The true course of love never did run smoothly, which is why we could all do with some advice from the older and wiser members of our community.

“Writing our relationship advice provided the perfect activity to reminisce, which can be incredibly beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia. Reflecting on strong memories from the past helps to boost confidence and offers the chance to re-live happy times, which can then prompt conversation.

“We have some fantastic people living here at Colne View, who always have so many fantastic words of wisdom to share. We learn a lot from their lifetime of experience each day, which is why their advice is so special – and often gives us all a good giggle too!”
