Round of ap-paws for local dogs at Stroud care home pet show

Home news

A care home in Stroud has announced the winners of its pet competition.

Care UK’s Scarlet House, on Westward Road, hosted its very own edition of Crufts, ‘Purr-fect Pets’, with funds raised donated to a local charity.

Round of ap-paws for local dogs at Stroud care home pet showAs part of the contest, team members, friends and families of residents were invited to showcase their pets’ skills and good looks in one or more of the eight possible categories: ‘Cutest pet’, ‘Best trick’ (in video), ‘Best pet under one year old’, ‘Golden oldies’, ‘Best dog’, ‘Best cat’, ‘Best other pet’ and ‘Pet and Owner lookalike’.

On the day, which saw £104 raised for the Pied Piper Appeal, a Gloucestershire-based charity with supports sick and disabled children, Meg, a Kerry Blue Terrier, was crowned ‘Best in Show’ by a judging panel of residents. The worthy winners received a special rosette and a certificate, with the overall winner also receiving a Pets at Home voucher.

Dot Pye, Home Manager at Scarlet House, said: “We’re pleased to say our first-ever pet show was a resounding success – we received so many wonderful pictures of adorable pets it was hard to pick just a handful of them.

“We know just how beneficial animal therapy can be for older people, especially for those living with dementia, as being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood and encourage social interaction. With current restrictions in place, a virtual pet competition seemed like the next best thing, and residents were thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of our judging panel – especially as it was all for a good cause.

“We’re looking forward to next year’s edition of our very own ‘Purr-fect Pets’ competition – and we can’t wait for our furry friends to be able to visit very soon.”

Scarlet House is a state-of-the-art care home and provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home, which features 86 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
