Ready, set, go! Suffolk care homes residents take a jog down memory lane by holding their own sports day

Highlighted home news

A group of care homes in Suffolk encouraged residents and staff members to relive their school days by holding a retro sports day.

Eleven Care UK homes from across the region joined up for a fun-filled day of competition, each hoping to be crowned the winner.

The homes donned their own team outfits, ranging from matching-coloured T-shirts to wacky fancy dress costumes in which they competed in a number of events, such as wheelbarrow races, a tug of war and even a managers versus deputy managers race. There were also events designed specifically to enable residents to join in the fun, including a bean bag toss and ball dribble challenge.

At the end of the day, an awards ceremony celebrated all who took part and saw Heathlands House care home, in Cambridge, crowned the winners of the 2022 Care UK Suffolk Sports Day.

Margaret Tobin, a resident at Mills Meadow, said: “I had a wonderful time being part of all the action and excitement – I even won the bean bag toss which I’m really proud of!

“It was lovely to mix with the other homes and I loved seeing everyone’s outfits – the superhero costumes and tutus were my favourites.”

Rebecca Calver, Home Manager at Mills Meadow, said: “Our sports day is often the most eagerly anticipated date in the calendar and a favourite amongst our residents. The day not only provides a lot of laughter and enjoyment for all involved but is an excellent way for residents to meet and mingle with lots of new faces – or some familiar ones – while helping keep active too.

Care UK’s Suffolk homes have been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives. The homes provide full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care and boast facilities including their very own cinemas and hair salons.
