Care home residents go wild as they host their own version of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

Home news

The jungle has come to Sidcup as residents at a local care home held their own Bushtucker Trials as part of their very own I’m a Resident, Get Me Out of Here!

Team members at Care UK’s Smyth Lodge, on Frognal Avenue, were delighted when residents wished to recreate the popular series and asked the team to set Bushtucker Trials for them.

The care home was transformed into a tropical setting with plenty of creepy crawlies and colleagues even donned Ant and Dec masks as they cheered on the residents.

The day was inspired by the popular show, and residents had to complete challenges to win stars for the team. Daring residents ate various items of food that represented the cuisine often found on the television series, such as maggots, worms and fish eyes. Residents were relieved to find out that they had been tricked into eating delicious treats that represented interesting items of fayre, such as rich pudding instead of maggots and sweets masquerading as fish eyes.

Resident, Joan Storey, aged 91, said: “I was a bit apprehensive about putting my hand into the Bushtucker Trial box to try to find the star as I wasn’t sure what I was putting my hand into. I did come across a squidgy centipede but managed to grab the important gold star. I was glad that the food challenge didn’t involve something as horrendous as poo or brains!”

Tracey Cheeseman, Home Manager at Smyth Lodge, added: “We had so much fun holding our own I’m a Resident, Get Me Out of Here! activity. We spent the whole day laughing, squirming and cheering.

“We love carrying out days such as this, it’s great to have the residents all together with the team members and carrying out an activity that everyone can get involved in. While the trials might not have been as daring as the ones celebrities carry out, we think we’ve all been very brave!”

Smyth Lodge has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The state-of-the-art care home, which opened in 2019, provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, and features a cinema, hair salon and activities room.
