Care home raises over £600 for local charity

A care home in Sutton Coldfield has raised over £600 for a local dementia charity.

The team at Care UK’s Bishops Manor, on Jockey Road, have raised £669.40 for the Purple Angel Dementia Campaign by hosting a charity tombola.

When Norman McNamara was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 50, he founded the Purple Angel Dementia Campaign. By providing information on how shops, businesses, and other services can help people living with degenerative conditions, the charity seeks to increase awareness, provide hope, and empower people living with dementia.

The team put out a call out to friends and family to drop off any unwanted Christmas presents or anything unusual that could be donated to the raffle. Bishops Manor was overwhelmed with how many people donated items.

On the day, the team hosted the tombola. They had a great laugh and raised a total of £669.40 for the charity.

Once the funds had been collected, the team invited representatives from the charity and Suzanne Mumford, Head of Nursing, Care and Dementia Services at Care UK, to the home for a special cheque presentation. Norman joined via Zoom on the day and spoke to families and residents about his experiences living with dementia, offering advice and support.

Continuing the partnership, Norman will be working with Care UK to provide more MP3 players to residents around the country. Music can have many benefits for people living with dementia. It can help reduce anxiety and depression, help maintain speech and language, enhance quality of life and has a positive impact on carers too.

Sarah Diamond, General Manager at Bishops Manor, said: “We had a wonderful time at our cheque presentation ceremony and are thrilled to have raised funds for a very deserving charity.

“Here at Bishops Manor, we’re keen to create strong links with national charities and provide support where we can. We are honoured to aid this charity who we know will benefit a huge amount from the funds we raised.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Norman for joining us on the day and sharing his advice. He really is an inspiration, and it was not only helpful to residents but also to families.

“Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our target. The Purple Angel Dementia Campaign positively impacts so many of those affected by dementia, and we are looking forward to working with them again.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Bishops Manor, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been designed to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
