Cooking up a storm! Edgbaston care home shortlisted for national award

Home news

A care home in Edgbaston is celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious national catering award.

Care UK’s Metchley Manor, on Church Road, has been shortlisted in the Catering Team of the Year’ category at the Caring UK Awards. The awards recognise excellence and achievements within the care sector across the UK.

The home’s catering team has been recognised for their high-quality dishes and dining experience, which offer a menu made up of modern and classic recipes, with food that looks as visually appealing as it tastes.

Leading the nomination is the home’s Head Chef, Scott Tame, who has been commended for the exceptional levels of communication with residents and their families. When residents move into the home, Scott ensures he understands their preferences in order to create a bespoke menu for each person.

With a background in fine dining, Scott has brought his culinary skills to the home producing top-quality, highly nutritious dishes that resemble something you would find in a high-end restaurant.

Scott and his team run an interactive cookery demonstration allowing residents to play a role in the creation of the menus. Going above and beyond his usual duties, Scott recently welcomed a resident who was a former cook into the kitchen to fulfil her wish of cooking for the other residents.

The judges also praised the catering team for actively working to change the narrative of what food is like in care homes, not only at Metchley Manor but across the care sector. Team members often share their award-winning creations across social media, and as a result, have helped to create a growing interest in careers in the care sector.

Scott Tame, Head Chef at Metchley Manor, said: “Being shortlisted in the Caring UK Awards is a wonderful achievement for our whole team. The meals we create and the overall dining experience at Metchely Manor have a huge impact on the wellbeing of residents, and we’re thrilled our efforts have been acknowledged at a national level.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a win, so we can bring home the bacon for Metchley Manor!”

Kim-Marie Newton, General Manager at Metchley Manor, added: “We are so pleased that the team has been recognised for their hard work in creating the best dining experience possible for residents.

“I want to say a massive thank you to Scott and the team for all their hard work to ensure that all mealtimes are enjoyable for residents. I’m very proud of what we achieve at the home and we’re hoping for a win in December!”

The ceremony for the Caring UK Awards will take place 7th December at the Athena, in Leicester.

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Metchley Manor, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
