Ipswich care homes invite community to honour VE Day

Two care homes in Ipswich are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, Care UK’s Asterbury Place, on Aster Road, and Prince George House, on Mansbrook Boulevard, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their very own 1940s-themed parties.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Asterbury Place, the team has been hard at work organising a special commemorative event, which will take place from 2pm-5pm, and see residents and guests enjoy a 1940s-themed party, complete with a delicious afternoon tea and entertainment.

Over at Prince George House, a garden party will be hosted from 3pm-5pm, and there will live entertainment to get toes tapping beneath the bunting, while guests will also be able to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea.

Victoria Barber, Home Manager at Asterbury Place, said: “Here at Asterbury Place, we’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.”

Luminita Tiff, Home Manager at Prince George House, added: “This milestone holds great significance for many of our residents, and we are eager to honour all those who were involved.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the run up to our VE Day celebration, residents have been sharing their own stories and memories of the poignant event, and it’s been fantastic to hear everyone’s experiences and learn from one another.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Prince George House, and excited to have a live entertainer join us to get everyone up and dancing as we mark such a significant moment in history.”

Asterbury Place and Prince George House provide high quality residential, dementia, nursing and respite care and are designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives. The homes offer plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation and comprehensive activity programmes, offering a mix of themed events, group activities and days out. The homes offer luxury facilities, including a cinema room, hair and beauty salon and café.
