Knutsford care home scores big with visit from father of footballing icon

A care home in Knutsford has kicked off the huge summer of sport in style by welcoming a special guest for an afternoon of matchday magic.

The team at Care UK’s Cranford Grange, on Hall Lane in Mobberley, invited Ted Beckham to the home to take part in an array of football-themed activities with residents.

Ted joined an enthusiastic audience for a lively discussion about his son David Beckham’s football career. He also shared memorabilia, including a photograph of Sir David receiving his knighthood from King Charles.

Residents had the opportunity to ask questions and reminisce about their favourite football memories, sparking plenty of engaging conversation.

The event continued with a friendly penalty shootout, where residents Mavis Parr, 96, and Margot Lewis, 100, impressed all by scoring past Ted, and a game of balloon football led by Physiofit.

Resident Norma Smethills, 90, said: "The afternoon was a truly fascinating experience. It was absolutely wonderful listening to Ted speak so openly, and hearing about David Beckham's childhood, his incredible football career, and the surprise announcement of his knighthood made the event even more special.

“It was also very kind of Ted to join us and introduce England's 2026 World Cup journey. The afternoon brought back many happy memories, especially of the 1998 World Cup, in which David played, and of course the unforgettable 1966 World Cup, when England famously lifted the trophy on home soil as the host nation."

The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Goal-den Moments' initiative, which aims to bring generations together and encourage residents to reminisce about cherished football memories while sharing new experiences.

Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Cranford Grange, said: “We’re home to many football fans, so it was an absolute pleasure to welcome Ted for such an engaging and fun-filled afternoon.

“It was inspiring to hear him speak about David’s illustrious career and the important role he played in shaping his son’s journey in the sport. Residents asked plenty of questions and enjoyed sharing their own favourite football memories.

“To round off the afternoon, residents even had the chance to take on Ted themselves – and playing football against him was a real thrill. A huge shoutout to Mavis and Margot for showing off their impressive skills. You put us all to shame!

“We’d like to extend a big thank you to Ted and Physiofit for joining us and helping to make it such a memorable day.”
