Mitchell House leads community in dementia awareness celebration

The residents at Mitchell House will be showing their friends in the community that a diagnosis of dementia is not the end of  an active life when they hold a celebration for Dementia Awareness Week on Friday 25^th May.

Our Home Manager Diana Wiltshire said: “It is understandable that people have concerns when they, or a loved one, receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease, or any other form of dementia, but our residents and their families know that, far from being the end, with good care and advice it can be the start of a new phase of your life.

“Before a diagnosis, it may be hard to understand your own, or a relative’s, actions or feelings but, with a correct diagnosis and proper care in place, people become more relaxed and can start enjoying their family and social life again.”

Mitchell House has won an award for its work with the community and many of its friends, volunteers and supporters will be at the celebration barbecue. Diana said: “We are lucky to have so many good friends in the community. We have regular visitors from church groups, the police and local schools.

“We encourage this, not only because the residents and the team enjoy meeting people, but because it helps to break down misconceptions and builds understanding, within the community, of what dementia really means to a person and their view of life.”
