Residents say thank you to Richmond school in their own special way

Residents at The Terrace said thank you in their own special way when a group of local school children, who made them a decorative quilt out of recycled materials, visited the home on Monday 28^th May.

Children from the Richmond C of E Primary School created the large quilt from old school uniforms, party dresses and colourful materials and now the quilt is framed and takes pride of place on the lounge wall, much to the delight of residents.

Activities Coordinator Sylvia Payne said: “They love the quilt, not just because it is a beautifully made, bright piece of work, but because of who made it for them. The children are regular visitors to the home and, as well as enjoying their conversation and company, the residents like to hear the children sing.

Sylvia said: “Their teacher, Mrs Foxwell, has taught them a lot of old songs like ‘Kiss Me Goodnight, Sergeant Major’ and favourites from Vera Lynn and the residents love to join.”

The residents wanted to say a special thank you for the quilt so, after some discussion, they decided to make some patriotic pom-pom pets.

Sylvia said: “They have been working very hard to create the red, white and blue pom-pom creatures and they have made 40, one for each child who visited us on the day. They enjoyed handing them out and seeing the children smile at the Jubilee-inspired critters.”

After the visit, everyone at the home in Maison Dieu will be getting ready for their actual Jubilee celebrations, with the team and residents helping to deck out the home with bunting and flags.

Manager Susan Mclaughlin said: “Everyone is really looking forward to the day as the Queen is very popular with the residents. We will be celebrating with an indoor street party, so that the weather won’t have a chance to dampen our spirits!

“The kitchen team are planning to do us proud and there will be lots of traditional party food, cake and an entertainer to keep us all in the party mood.”
