The competition, held across Care UK’s 105 care homes and day clubs, challenged homes to produce a Christmas cake that would be baked by chefs in the homes and decorated with the help of residents and day club visitors.
After a series of regional judging heats, nine finalists were chosen and their cakes presented to Care UK Chief Executive Mike Parish and Hotel Services Manager Iain Stott for final judging.
With points scored for taste, texture and appearance, as well as a book detailing the creation process, Mike and Iain were tasked with tasting the cakes and choosing a winner.
Cakes going through to the final came from Woodland Hall, Whitebourne, Silversprings, Buchanan Court, Kenilworth Grange, Sunningdale Court, Ellesmere House, Paisley Court and Haven Lodge care homes.
After the judging, Iain said: “We were really impressed by the standard of entries – you could see how the homes had gone to town with the decorations and icing.
“In fact, they were all so good we went back and tasted them all twice before making a final decision.”
The winning cake was eventually declared as Haven Lodge’s creation and depicted a Christmas storybook surrounded by festive figurines created by residents and the team at the home.
