Residents at Colne View revisit RAF roots at Duxford Imperial War Museum

A group of residents from Colne View took a trip down memory lane when they paid a visit to Duxford Imperial War Museum; and the day was of special significance for some of the residents who had had roles in the RAF during the Second World War.

Situated in Cambridgeshire and founded in 1917, Duxford Imperial War Museum is renowned as the European centre of aviation history.  Residents soaked up the atmosphere of the historic site, which played an important role in the success of the Battle of Britain of 1940; and they took a closer look at iconic aircraft, including the Spitfire, Lancaster, Concorde and Vulcan.

Home manager, Omar Taylor, said.  “The residents involved thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Duxford Imperial War Museum. The Second World War touched all their lives and you could see just much they valued the opportunity to talk about their experiences.  

“The day was even more special for those who had been in the RAF during the war. Ted Kilmartin was an RAF photographer, Jack Cottam was a squadron leader in the RAF, Roy Hopkins worked in the RAF’s medical services at the time, and Nellie Harris was in the Women’s Land Army in Lancashire.  They had such varied roles in the war, but the RAF has created a shared bond.

“The trip to the museum was such a great success we are already planning a second visit.  Incorporating activities such as this into the day-to-day lives of residents at Colne View is incredibly important, and helps to ensure all individuals enjoy the quality of life they deserve. For those living with dementia there are also many benefits in getting out and about, and in participating in nostalgic activities which can build on what they know or have known.”
