Rhyming success for Ferndown Manor residents in national poetry competition

Home news

A poem written by Ferndown Manor residents was awarded the runner-up prize in a national poetry competition.

To celebrate World Poetry Day, Care UK organised a national poetry competition, encouraging care home residents to put pen to paper to create their own short verses and poems.

Residents at Ferndown Manor collaborated to write a poem on what life is like at the care home. The carefully crafted piece, called “Ferndown Manor – My home”, addresses common misconceptions about care homes, and also describes some touching moments of life that many people can relate to, from freshly formed friendships to new experiences.

Ferndown Manor home manager, Janet Lewis, said: “We are thrilled that the residents’ poem is the runner-up in Care UK’s poetry competition. It’s a beautifully written poem and the residents are really pleased to see their efforts being recognised.

“Our World Poetry Day celebrations are a great example of how activity based care at Ferndown Manor supports residents to continue enjoying their passions and hobbies. Poetry is a great way to express emotions and memories, and the residents really enjoyed teaming up to craft the poem together.”
