Chelmsford care home shortlisted for two awards

Home news

A care home in Chelmsford is celebrating after being shortlisted for two awards. Care UK’s Manor Lodge, on Manor Road, has made it to the final stage of the ‘Dignity and Respect Care Home of the Year’ category in this year’s National Care Awards, and has also been shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding Leadership’ category in the Essex Care Sector Awards.

Both awards celebrate excellence across the care sector and shine a light on the work that individuals and care providers undertake.

The care team at Manor Lodge, rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, has been recognised for their person-centred care and commitment to going above and beyond for residents. By creating life story books with each resident, team members are able to better understand how they can be supported to lead active and fulfilling lives. One resident, who used to be a nun, now goes to mass each morning and has even been on holiday on her own.

Manor Lodge also has a dedicated approach to providing exceptional dementia care. A ‘Tree of Life’ has been created in the advanced dementia suite, which displays photographs and information on each resident and helps the care team to start meaningful conversations. Dementia-friendly crockery, as well as specialised cutlery and glassware, is also used to ensure residents can continue to eat and drink independently.

As well as supporting residents, Manor Lodge’s commitment to innovative dementia care also extends to the local community. The home works with local schools and organisations to implement ‘The Archie Project’, an intergenerational scheme which aims to reduce the stigma around dementia.

As the only care home in the region which has its own physiotherapy service and gym, physical activity forms an essential part of residents’ care plans. One resident was able to move home following the success of physiotherapy sessions, which greatly improved her mobility and independence.

Home manager, Juliana Miles, was also shortlisted for her exceptional leadership and the support she has in place for the team, who are encouraged to suggest ways of improving the service they provide. By providing open communication, continual learning and a shared vision, the home fosters an approach that supports not only the residents, but their families too.

One relative said: “I can honestly rate Manor Lodge as an outstanding care facility and question whether there is another home that’s equal in its delivery of care and attention.”

Juliana Miles, home manager at Manor Lodge, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for not one, but two awards.

“Here at Manor Lodge we are very proud of the wonderful environment we have created, and believe that outstanding care should be the norm. The team are always suggesting ways to improve the service we provide and are committed to providing extremely high standards of care for residents.

“I would like to say thank you to our entire team, as I know their work is greatly appreciated by myself, residents and their families.”

Manor Lodge is a modern and welcoming purpose-built care home in Chelmsford that delivers nursing, residential and short-term respite care for older people. The home also has specialist expertise in supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
