Love is in the air – Windsor residents reveal the secret to a happy marriage

Home news

A couple at a local care home shared the secret to a happy marriage after marking over six decades years together.

To celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary, the team at Care UK’s Mountbatten Grange, on Helston Lane, encouraged Marie and John Thorpe to reminisce about their early days as a couple and reveal their secrets to a happy marriage – which Marie said was ‘understanding one another’ while John joked ‘a happy wife.’

Love is in the air – Windsor residents reveal the secret to a happy marriageThe home team organised a special cake made by the home’s head chef, a virtual call with the couple’s family, and a glass of bubbly to mark the occasion.

The couple met at a disco when they were younger, fell in love and have been inseparable ever since. They got married in 1958, and after travelling around Europe for their honeymoon, settled down in to start their life together.

John started his own business and loved the independence of being his own boss. Marie worked as a tailor, but when John’s business started getting more successful, she eventually began working at the company as well so she could support him.

The couple, have been at Mountbatten Grange for five months and enjoy spending time doing jigsaw puzzles, watching rugby and taking their daily walk together around the gardens. John and Marie also enjoy sharing stories from their younger years and keeping in touch with their family on their tablet.

Debbie Winwood, Home Manager at Mountbatten Grange, said: “Marie and John are truly inseparable, and we could all learn a thing or two from their secret to a happy marriage. We thought that their anniversary was the perfect opportunity to encourage them to reminisce and share their pearls of wisdom.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Marie and John for their wise words – they certainly gave us food for thought.”
