Buzzing – is this Southmead’s most ‘bee-friendly’ care home?

A care home in Southmead might just be the most bee-friendly home in the area.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Trymview Hall, on Southmead Road, has created an idyllic habitat for local bees in the home’s garden.

With the help of local bee-keeper, Alyson Hurst, residents have sponsored a worker bee named Herbert. The home’s gardening club has also planted bee-friendly flowers, including lamb's-ear and flowers from the Asteraceae family, all over the garden to encourage other buzzing visitors.

The flower beds at Trymview Hall now contain a mix of flowering plants, such lavender, used during activities to create scent bags, and chives, which residents regularly harvest for the home’s cooking classes. Part of the garden has also been left to grow wild in order to create a meadow area – and visits from bees and other friendly garden creatures have since become a much more regular occurrence, delighting residents and team members alike.

Charlotte Levin, Home Manager at Trymview Hall, said: “Spending time outdoors and being around all the different colours, smells and sounds our beautiful garden now features has many positive benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia.

“There are always things to do outside the home – whether it’s watering our flowers or simply take a minute to observe the local wildlife. Tending to the garden encourages residents to keep active and gives them a sense of purpose all while helping them to maintain their independence where possible.

“We’re proud to call ourselves Southmead’s most bee-friendly care home – it’s been a joy to see our garden flourish in the past two months, and we can’t wait to welcome even more buzzing visitors to the home.”

Trymview Hall provides full-time residential and dementia care, with 66 ensuite bedrooms, and has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
