Enfield care home gains top marks from care inspectors

Home news

An Enfield care home has been praised by national inspectors for its activity-based approach to care.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge, on Pennington Drive, an overall ‘Good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.

The home received ‘Good’ ratings in all five categories, including safety, effectiveness, level of care, responsiveness and having a well-led service.

The team impressed CQC inspectors by empowering residents to be as independent as they could be. Team members were seen asking residents their opinions and acting on their requests, even if they changed their mind a short time later – residents are always supported to make their own choices. One resident told the inspectors: “They know me really well. They do everything I want. I couldn’t ask for more.” Another resident said: “Whatever I ask for they will get for me. I choose.”

The report also highlighted the home's proactive approach to ensuring residents maintained close contact with their families throughout the pandemic. The inspectors witnessed multiple electronic tablets in the home to enable residents to communicate with their friends and family. The report noted that one person had a videocall with their spouse every morning where they chatted and ate their breakfast together as they had done in the home before the national lockdown.

Residents are actively encouraged to try new hobbies and activities at Elizabeth Lodge, with the lifestyle team on hand to support residents to live fulfilling lives. Recently the home organised an Olympic-themed event, which proved to be a popular activity with many residents getting involved, and when the inspectors arrived the team were preparing for a fancy dress barbecue.

There were records and photographs of activities that had taken place at the home including art, pampering, exercise classes and a magic table, which is a technology allowing individual games and sensory experiences. On the day of the inspection, the team were interacting positively with residents in the lounges and gardens, talking to them and responding to their needs.

The report noted that the team understands each individual resident's requirements, as well as their history, which contributes to the home’s person-centered culture. Many of the team had also undergone Namaste training, which is a way of communicating and providing positive, meaningful interactions with residents living with advanced dementia.

Additonally, the respect of equality and diversty was noted by inspectors. Resident's cultural needs and preferences were recorded, which  included the languages they spoke and the food they liked to eat. The inspectors saw the team talking to people in their preferred languages.

Michelle Sampang, Home Manager at Elizabeth Lodge said: “We are delighted to have received a Good CQC rating. The positive feedback from the inspectors is wonderful, and it’s especially rewarding to see the recognition of the team’s hard work and dedication to providing person-centre care and ensure residetns continue to live fullfilling lives despite the challenges of the last 18 months.

“We are committed to ensuring all the residents have their every need cared for in a dignified, professional and loving manner, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at Elizabeth Lodge for their hard work – they are the reason that our care home is such a fantastic place to live for all of the residents, and I applaud everything they do on a daily basis.”

On the day of the inspection, CQC inspectors interacted with team members, residents, and their visiting family to assess service standards at Elizabeth Lodge. They also looked into the documents and processes in place at the care home.
