Linking up – Southmead care home art project brings the community together

A care home in Southmead teamed up with the community for a very special art project. 

Residents at Care UK’s Trymview Hall, on Southmead Road, had their art supplies at the ready to mark Children’s Art Week. 

 

Working with Honeytree Day Nursery & Preschool Bristol and Lake House Day Nursery, residents set out to create an art display on the fence outside the care home, aptly named ‘Our community links’. The installation features paper figures decorated by children and residents alike, and celebrates the home’s positive relationships with its neighbours. 

The project gained traction within the local community, and now also includes contributions from local shop McColls, Southmead Hospital and home care provider, Home Instead. 

Customer Relations Manager at Trymview Hall Michael Kenny said: “Residents loved getting creative with local children for our ‘Community Links’ project, and they were thrilled to see the result of their work displayed outside the home for all of our neighbours to see. 

“Creative activities play a big part of life here at Trymview Hall, and we actively encourage residents to continue lifelong arty hobbies and try new expressive pastimes. Art has a variety of benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it provides an alternative way to communicate and express emotions, and an opportunity to relive happy memories – so it was great to have the support of the community on this project.

“It’s been a challenging 18 months, and while we’ve stayed in touch with our neighbours virtually as much as possible, this is a great physical reminder of the unbreakable bond we’ve created with the rest of our community. We look forward to welcoming everyone in again as soon as we’re able!”

Trymview Hall provides full-time residential and dementia care, with 66 ensuite bedrooms, and has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
