Let’s Get Physical – Stansted care home residents take unusual approach to getting fit

Home news

A care home in Stansted has been taking part in an unusual type of exercise to kick start the new year.

Residents at Mountfitchet House, on Coltsfield, have ’time travelled’ back to the 1980s as part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative – which aims to encourage residents to get up and active by trying something new.

Residents donned their neon legwarmers and sweatbands for an 80s inspired seated fitness class with local personal trainer, Leila Hobart, from InspireUK, which included seated leg raises, arm reaches, and neck stretches.

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to move more by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even ice skating.

Jade Rackham, Customer Relations Manager at Mountfitchet House, said: “We had a fantastic time going back to the 80s for a retro inspired workout here at Mountfitchet House.

“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, and as many residents love the music of the 80s, this seemed like the perfect activity.

“As flexibility, mobility and strength naturally declines in age, seated chair workouts offer the perfect way for older people to maintain and strengthen their muscles without overexerting themselves. Not only that, but exercise and movement have wonderful benefits for mood and overall wellbeing, and taking part in a group activity like this can often leave residents feeling happier and healthier.

“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, our 80s workout was a hit and we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, maybe we’ll try the 90s next!”

As part of the initiative, Care UK has also teamed up with popular 80s fitness star, the Green Goddess, to create a series of bespoke exercise videos for its homes to enjoy. Residents and team members across the country are encouraged to don their best Lycra and neon accessories and take part in the fun new workouts.

Diana Moran, the Green Goddess, said: “I am delighted to support Care UK to encourage residents across the country to get active by trying something new.

“Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!”

Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, Mountfitchet House has its very own cinema, bar and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
