A wheel of a time – Worcester care home residents take unusual approach to getting fit

Home news

A care home in Worcester has been taking part in an unusual type of exercise to kick start the new year.

Residents at Perry Manor, on Charles Hastings Way, have been pedalling for a ‘wheelie’ good cause as part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative – which aims to encourage residents to get up and active by trying something new.

Throughout the month, residents and team members have been taking part in a 100-hour sponsored cycle to raise funds for their chosen charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, using the home’s inclusive exercise bike, a pedalling device which allows residents to use it while comfortably seating in their chair. Thanks to their efforts, they have already reached twice their fundraising target of £100.

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to move more by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even ice skating.

Katherine Matthews, Home Manager at Perry Manor, said: “We had a fantastic time taking part in our charity cycle here at Perry Manor.

“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, which is why cycling seemed like the perfect activity.

“Cycling is a fantastic low-impact activity with tremendous benefits for older people. It can boost their physical and mental wellbeing all while reducing the risk of heart disease. Our mini exercise bike can be used sitting down, meaning residents of all abilities are able to take part if they wish to and enjoy the benefits of cycling – all for a good cause.

“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, our charity cycle was a hit – we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may have the next Tour de France winner in our midst!”

As part of the initiative, Care UK has also teamed up with popular 80s fitness star, the Green Goddess, to create a series of bespoke exercise videos for its homes to enjoy. Residents and team members across the country are encouraged to don their best Lycra and neon accessories and take part in the fun new workouts.

Diana Moran, the Green Goddess, said: “I am delighted to support Care UK to encourage residents across the country to get active by trying something new.

“Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!”
