I like to ride my bicycle – Southampton care home residents take unusual approach to getting fit

Home news

A care home in Southampton has been taking part in an unusual type of exercise to keep fit.

Residents at Care UK’s Ancasta Grove, on Barnes Lane, have been enjoying a virtual cycle ride as part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative – which aims to encourage residents to get up and active by trying something new.

Team members organised a virtual cycle from Cams Mill Fareham to Portchester Castle. The residents used a mini-motorised exercise bike to cycle, while a large screen showed how far they’d got to go on a map. Other residents chose to rack up the miles by walking in the home’s garden – with everyone completing the challenge in just two weeks.

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to move more by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even ice skating.

Chris Roby, Customer Relations Manager at Ancasta Grove, said: “We had a fantastic time taking part in a virtual cycle here at Ancasta Grove.

“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, which is why our virtual cycle and walk seemed like the perfect activity.

“Exercise is incredibly important for maintaining physical and mental health, especially in older people, whose mobility, balance, and strength naturally begins to decline with age. Enjoying physical exercise in a novel and exciting way can greatly increase resident involvement, leading to improved fitness levels and a more positive mood.

“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, the virtual cycle was a hit – we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may have the next Mark Cavendish in our midst!”

Ancasta Grove, which opened its doors in June 2021, has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as respite and end of life care, and is proud to be able to offer a ‘home for life’ if an individual’s needs change over time. The team are able to offer show rounds by appointment so local residents can see the home for themselves and ask any questions they may have about the care available.
